Review: The Gospel of John

An upcoming major motion picture produced by Garth Drabinsky and directed by Philip Saville

One minute. That’s all it took of the preview screening of The Gospel of John to hook me. In all honesty, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. After all, Christian films don’t have a reputation for being world-wide blockbusters. But just one minute into the screening, I was already sitting on the edge of my seat, digesting each intensely-packed scene as I watched the Gospel message portrayed like never before.

This masterful production captures every word of the Gospel of John, combining careful word-for-word progression from the Good News translation with compelling and evocative drama. John’s gospel portrayal in particular is said to be the most beloved of the four, and this film allows you to see just why that is. From the early days of Christ’s ministry through his ascension, the Gospel message in this film is clearly presented in a manner that brings each viewer to the very foot of the Cross as it follows the eyewitness account of John.

With the historically accurate sets, each viewer feels as if he/she were back in first-century Judea, and the impressive and award-winning cast brings a supreme level of acting that exceeds all expectations as they bring the good news convincingly in an unprecedented manner, all on top of a moving musical score that draws you passionately into each scene.

This is definitely not a movie to miss. As I was sitting in the theater, I couldn’t help but begin to make a list of my unchurched friends that I knew I had to invite with me to see this film, which premieres in many theaters beginning November 7, 2004. Watch the gospel come alive on film as you see one of the most poignant presentations of the Gospel of John that you will ever witness. There’s no doubt that The Gospel of John will be a presentation that will be remembered for years to come and will inspire its viewers to think carefully and deeply about the most important issues of faith.

"Wow! The Word became flesh and bone and moved onto the movie screen. A gift for every family. The style of substance triumphs!"
